Joint Replacement and Resurfacing

In some cases, replacing all or some of the joint with a prostheses is the best way to relieve pain and restore function. Prostheses are often used to combat issues associated with arthritis, other chronic conditions, or traumatic injury. Each prostheses is built to move like a regular joint and glide smoothly restoring natural movement. The custom fit pieces are held to the surrounding bone either with a locking mechanism or with a special bone cement.

Recovery from joint replacement depends on the location of the joint as well as the patient’s age and overall health. The physician will discuss your recovery time and when it is safe to return to normal activities. Once in place, prostheses usually perform well for up to a decade or longer.

Resurfacing joints is less complicated than replacement, used primarily for younger patients and usually retains a more normal feeling after surgery.
